Reed was born in Edinburgh and took up boxing at the age of 15 to keep him out of trouble.[1]
He made his professional mixed martial arts debut in 2006 at the age of 35, and won his first seven fights, including a victory over Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Alexandre Izidro. His first loss came in March 2008 when he was submitted by Emmanuel Fernandez but he was still given the chance to fight in the Cage Rage Championships, the UK's biggest promotion at the time, in his next fight. He took on former British Featherweight Champion Brad Pickett at Cage Rage 26: Extreme and lost by majority decision. He outboxed Pickett for the majority of the fight, but was dominated on the ground.[2] After this, he notched up a record of 5 wins and two losses over the next two years.
In February 2010, he fought Germany's Alan Omer for the vacant BAMMA Featherweight Championship at BAMMA 2: Roundhouses at the Roundhouse. The first three rounds saw Reed dominate Omer on the ground. Things changed dramatically in the fourth round, however, as Omer synched in a triangle choke for the submission win.[3] He returned at BAMMA 3: Horwich vs. Watson against Ashleigh Grimshaw. Grimshaw was able to knock Reed out in the second round.
